Is your Kitchen ready in case of a fire?

According to the NFPA, approximately 61% of all restaurant fires are caused by cooking. Of course in a cooking establishment that's where most fire are likely to occur. A lot of these fires could potentially be catastrophic to the business or worse fatal to a customer or employee. So how is it that these fires were not stopped before they got out of hand? There are many factors that contribute to all these unexpected fires, but there are also ways of reducing the risk of something small becoming something big. Fire protection equipment plays a big role on preventing the spread of fires, an example of this would be an Ansul system which are very effective.

Kitchen Suppression Annual/Semi Annual Inspection

Kitchen Hood Inspections play an important role in the safety and protection of any kitchen, building, and all of it's occupants. This is why these systems are required to be inspected and tested semi-annually to ensure the proper operation of all of it's components.

What takes place during an Inspection?

  1. Once on site the first thing you can expect is to have the alarm and monitoring system to be put on test to avoid any false alarms sent out.
  2. We would then verify that the system has not been tampered with, and disarm the system to avoid any unwanted discharge.
  3. Check and notate Manufacturer/Hydro Date.
  4. Verify that the Pressure Gauge is in operating range.
  5. Ensure that any hoses or lines are not damaged.
  6. Inspect the positioning of all appliances to ensure that they are properly covered by nozzles overhead. (Nozzles should be pointed accordingly to appliances , ducts, and plenum)
  7. Ensure that Nozzles have blow off caps in place to avoid any grease clogging up the discharge point.
  8. Test out the Pull station and Detection Line.
  9. Once activated ensure that the Alarm System in the building is activated.
  10. Ensure proper operation of Mechanical/Electrical gas valve.
  11. Ensure that all Electrical outlets/appliances are powered down.
  12. Ensure that Make up air coming into the building shuts off.
  13. Ensure that Exhaust Fans stay.
  14. Once all this is verified make sure to have everything placed back into operating condition. This includes the Fire Alarm Panel and attach an Inspection tag filled out by a licensed technician.
